While the charging stations look like any other that are increasingly popping up across the country, their back story includes an international emissions scandal, a world-famous automotive manufacturer, billions of dollars in fines, and a push to capitalize on the next generation of vehicles while helping the planet along the way. The car company is Volkswagen, and last decade the German company was caught manipulating software to allow its diesel-powered vehicles to pollute beyond federal and state emission standards.
