Local tobacco and sweet potato farmers who are getting ready to prep their land this spring can register now for respirator fit tests by the N.C. Agromedicine Institute from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Nash County Agriculture Center in Nashville. Medical clearance forms for participants must be turned in by Friday. “It’s mandated by manufacturers and the state that farmers have training and proper equipment to use fumigants,” said Mary Wilks of Carolina Precision Consulting, an agriculture consulting company in Nash County. “Land fumigants are used to control disease and nematodes.”
