NC's March 2022 Hog Report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2022 totaled 8.0 million head, same as December 1, 2021. Market hogs, at 7.2 million head, were down 6% from same quarter last year and down slightly from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 800,000 head, down 4% from last year and down 1% from last quarter.

The State’s pig crop during the December 2021 – February 2022 period totaled 4.25 million head, down 4% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 405,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.5 down slightly from the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 410,000 sows during the March–May 2022 quarter and 415,000 sows during the June–August 2022 quarter. North Carolina ranks 3 rd nationally in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
