The publication An Explanation of Ownership Rights in Property has been published by N.C. Cooperative Extension. This paper – still pending peer review – is meant to explain the basic common law principles of how land is titled, both real property (land) and personal property (everything not land). The paper provides a primer on common law severable interests, co-tenancy and life estates, as well as documentation associated with proof and defense of title. This paper was printed as part of the So You Inherited a Farm handbook supporting the 2022 Land Summit programs in Moore, Franklin, and Gaston, Lincoln and Cleveland counties. (Residual copies will be distributed at further speaking events pending new printing).
