The U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) funds research and development (R&D) of technologies necessary for the deployment and production of cost-competitive bioenergy, primarily biofuels. Results of experimental efforts are periodically compiled and compared with benchmark technology designs to assess progress made toward BETO goals. This report provides a status of those R&D efforts at the end of 2020 and discusses technical challenges and barriers facing the industry.

Access the BETO 2020 R&D State of Technology report.

BETO supports research, development, and demonstration to enable the sustainable use of domestic biomass and waste resources for the production of biofuels and bioproducts. BETO is part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
