Last week, more than 40 young immigrants came to Washington D.C. from across the country to advocate for themselves and their families, including Fedora from Apex, pictured below. They, and 200,000 others, are referred to as “Documented Dreamers” because they come here legally with their parents who have visas, but when they turn 21 they “age out” of the system – usually because of the decades-long visa backlog – and face an impossible choice. They can either stay in the United States without legal status or “self-deport,” leaving families, friends, and jobs to return to countries they might barely remember.
