House Agriculture Chairman David Scott released the following statement following his remarks at today's CFTC Voluntary Carbon Markets Convening.

Today I had the great honor of appearing as a keynote speaker at a meeting with the CFTC to discuss carbon markets and their role in our agricultural economy. The first hearing I hosted as Chairman of our House Agriculture Committee was to discuss climate change and how our farmers, ranchers, and foresters will be and have been impacted,” said Chairman David Scott.

“As we work to address those impacts, voluntary carbon markets provide an opportunity for agricultural producers to be rewarded for implementing practices that sequester carbon.”

“Thank you to the CFTC for hosting this important meeting and addressing the need for thorough oversight of these markets. Our farmers, ranchers, and foresters deserve a reliable and transparent accounting and verification framework that ensures the integrity of these carbon offsets. Today’s meeting is an important step in making sure that happens,” Chairman David Scott continued.
