Aerial treatment for spongy (not gypsy) moths starts (Alleghany, Surry, Watauga...)

The N.C. Department of Agriculture is spraying infestations of spongy moths (formerly called gypsy moths) from airplanes flying over Alleghany, Surry, Watauga and six other counties this month. Treatments were scheduled to start as early as June 1 and continue through June 16. “We have a total of 11 blocks and 16,957 acres (of forestland) to treat,” said Paul Adams, NCDA regulatory entomologist.
