NC June 2022 hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2022 totaled 8.2 million head, up 2.5% from last quarter and up 1% from last year. Market hogs, at 7.4 million head, were up 1% as well from last year. Breeding stock totaled 820,000 head, same as last year.

The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2022 period totaled 4.37 million head, down 1% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 420,000 sows.

Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.4, which is up from the 10.3 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 415,000 sows during the June–August 2022 quarter and 410 sows during the September–November 2022 quarter.

North Carolina currently ranks 3 rd nationally, behind Iowa and Minnesota, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
