Half of western N.C. national forests may open to logging under federal plan

From the Craggy Gardens overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the wild peaks and dense woods spread out for miles in Pisgah National Forest. Between Pisgah and the Nantahala National Forest, there are more than a million acres of federally owned forest in western North Carolina. But a new management plan from the U.S. Forest Service could open up half of the forests to potential logging.
