Mexican migrant workers keep local farms going (Transylvania Co.)

Mexican migrant farmers have been providing labor to local farms for decades in Transylvania County. This season, their labor has been essential. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Clem Swift, owner of Clem’s Organic Gardens, on the shortage of farm workers this year. Swift is a millennial who recently purchased 12 acres of farmland off Davidson River Road in Pisgah Forest. The other six seasons when he leased the land, Swift easily found laborers such as college students off for the summer or local residents to tend to his certified organic farm.
