Half the country is in drought, and no region has been spared

More than 50% of the country was in some level of drought for the fourth week in a row, the US Drought Monitor reported Thursday, as the combination of extreme heat and low rainfall is drawing the moisture out of plants and soil. And no region of the country has been spared. The West and California remains engulfed in a multi-year megadrought. But even in the Northeast, a severe "flash drought" -- one that comes on rapidly -- has intensified and expanded from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts into New Hampshire and Maine.
