Deadline to seek aid for damage nears (Western N.C. Agricultural Crop Loss Program.

Farmers in Wilkes, Alexander and five other counties with losses from an April 2021 freeze and frost have been declared eligible for financial aid through the Western N.C. Agricultural Crop Loss Program. The other five counties are Cleveland, Lincoln, McDowell, Mitchell and Yancey. All seven counties are producers of apples and other tree fruit, plus some produce grapes. The April 2021 freeze reduced apple and peach crops in the Brushy Mountains of Wilkes and Alexander counties by about half overall.
