Common Ragweed – a challenging weed to control in Fraser Fir production

Common ragweed is (as the name suggests) common in most cropping systems. Control strategies include a combination of preemergence and/or postemergence herbicides as well as cultivation and mulches. Yet, herbicide-resistant populations have made this weed more challenging to control, especially in NC Fraser fir Christmas tree fields where growers try to maintain white clover ground covers to protect soil from erosion and prevent most summer annual weeds from establishing. In this fact sheet, we have summarized the available control options and some of our recent research on this pest.
