North Carolina wheat, cotton, peanuts, soybean production estimates up, corn down

“We, in USDA/NASS recognize this is a hectic time of the year for farmers and want to express our sincere appreciation for their time in completing the monthly Agricultural Yield Survey,” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. “It is during these times quality, reliable agricultural data are vital to assist farmers in their decision making, as well as providing vital data to organizations supporting NC agriculture to make informed decisions which directly affect farmers’ operations. 

By responding, the growers provided essential information for crop yields that helped determine monthly production forecasts and ensured USDA decisions are based on the most accurate data.” 

Corn for grain

• Yield estimate of 108 bushels per acre is down 41 bushels from last year’s yield of 149 bushels per acre. • Production forecast at 90.7 million bushels is down 33% from the 134.8 million bushels produced last year.

• Harvested acres projected at 840,000 are down from the 905,000 acres harvested in 2021. 

Cotton

• Yield estimate of 871 pounds per acre is down 146 pounds from last year’s yield of 1,017 pounds per acre. • Production forecast at 780,000 bales is up 1% from last year’s production of 773,000 bales.

• Harvested acres projected at 430,000 are up from the 365,000 acres harvested in 2021.

Peanuts

• Yield estimate of 4,200 pounds per acre 150 pounds from last year’s estimate of 4,350 pounds.

• Production forecast at 499.8 million pounds is up 1% from last year’s production of 495.9 million.

• Harvested acres projected at 119,000 acres are down up from the 114,000 acres harvested in 2021. 

Soybeans

• Yield estimate of 37 bushels per acre is down 3 bushels from last year’s yield of 40 bushels.

• Production forecast at 66.2 million bushels is up 1% from last year’s production of 65.6 million bushels. • Harvested acres projected at 1.79 million acres are up 150,000 acres from last year.

Flue-Cured Tobacco

• Yield estimate of 2,000 pounds per acre is down 100 pounds from last year.

• Production forecast at 248 million pounds per acre is down 2% from last year’s production of 252 million pounds.

• Harvested acres projected at 124,000 acres are down 4,000 acres from 2021. 

Winter Wheat

• Yield estimate of 65 bushels per acre is up 9 bushels per acre from 2021.

• Production forecast at 25.7 million bushels per acre is up 33% from last year’s production of 19.3 million bushels.

• Harvested acres projected at 395,000 acres are up 50,000 acres from last year.
