The meat industry's track record on worker safety continues to improve, with injuries and illnesses down 10.7 percent in 2008, the American Meat Institute said, citing the latest government data.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report also shows cases involving days away from work, job transfer or restriction fell by 9.1 percent, according to AMI.
The data reflect a continued focus on improving worker and workplace safety across the entire industry over the past two decades, AMI said in a statement.
