The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published interim guidance for workers who are employed at commercial swine farms intended to prevent the spread of influenza A viruses, including the Novel H1N1 virus.

The interim guidance contains information about recognizing the signs of flu in pigs, taking steps to prevent the transmission of influenza viruses from pigs to people and vice versa, surveillance and monitoring of workers' health, identifying high-risk groups, administering influenza antiviral drugs and vaccinating swine workers.

Meanwhile, USDA is asking hog farmers to submit samples of sick animals to be tested for Novel H1N1 influenza.
Media reports indicate that the agency understands that producers are reluctant to have their herds associated with the virus, but it needs to samples in order to detect and track the virus, as well as develop, improve and stockpile vaccines for U.S. swine.

The USDA reportedly is getting $27.75 million in supplemental funding to track the virus and develop vaccines.
