Of 1,773 samples from 172 broiler establishments analyzed by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service during the third quarter of 2009, there was a 7.1 percent positive rate, up from a positive rate of 5.2 percent in the second quarter of that year, the North American Meat Processors Association reported in its weekly newsletter.

FSIS last week posted the third quarterly progress report of calendar year 2009 on salmonella testing of selected raw meat and poultry products, which provides preliminary data from July through September 2009 on all establishments eligible for salmonella testing that have completed at least two sampling verification sets since June 2006.
