NC statewide forest resources draft G.O.S. review
Story Date: 4/12/2010

Source:  NC Division of Forest Resources, 4/9/10

Dear friends and colleagues,

The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources has completed the first draft of the Goals, Objectives and Strategies necessary to address issues and opportunities identified in the Statewide Forest Resource Assessment we released in March. In order to address the assessment findings, these strategies will guide the investment of federal, state and partner resources and will help focus coordinated and collaborative efforts in landscapes where issues and opportunities are the greatest over the next 5 years and beyond. This effort will help us collectively plan for the conservation of these resources and the associated economic, ecological and public benefits these resources provide.

Through this process, we have identified seven broad goals. These broad goals are further distilled into objectives, and finally, more detailed strategies. Each strategy contains a matrix that describes a collaborative implementation process in greater detail. Successful implementation of strategies to address threats and opportunities identified in the Statewide Forest Resource Assessment cannot be tackled by one group, organization or agency. You will notice that within these strategy matrices, key stakeholders and partners have been identified who are crucial to successful implementation of strategies. We must work together to be successful. We are particularly interested in your feedback to help identify key stakeholders and partners that may be missing.

At this point seven goals with associated objectives and strategies and six priority maps (two landscape priority maps and four programmatic priority maps), which many of you are seeing for the first time, are ready for review. Your feedback is needed to ensure the successful completion of the process.

If you have been working with us on the assessment, I want to thank you for your efforts to date and encourage you to continue to assist with molding this document into a tool that can help us to achieve our goal of conserving and sustaining our great forest resources.

If you are new to this process, we welcome you aboard and look forward to increasing partnerships like these that will help us meet our conservation and sustainability directives.

We welcome your input on North Carolina's Draft Forest Resource Goals, Objectives and Strategies. We ask that you share this invitation with others within your organization so they too can comment on ways this document can be improved. The deadline for submission is 5:00 PM, Friday, April 23, 2010 using the following website:  www.ncsu.edu/feop/SFA/
