People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling for Alle Processing, one of the country's largest processors of glatt kosher meat products, and the Orthodox Union (OU), which certifies Alle's products, to stop sourcing and approving beef from a South American slaughterhouse that allegedly uses inhumane methods.

Repeating a videotape investigation that it conducted two years ago, PETA says in a news release on its Web site that Frigorifico Las Piedras, a Uruguayan slaughterhouse that supplies Alle, still uses a "shackle and hoist" method of slaughter it deems inhumane. In the release, Temple Grandin is quoted as saying, "This is a cruel, dangerous practice that should be stopped. This cruel method should be replaced with upright restraint."

In the wake of the earlier investigation, Israel's chief Ashkenazi rabbi, Yona Metzger, promised to phase out use of the method on animals that will be used for kosher products. PETA calls for the OU and Alle to stop buying meat from Frigorifico Las Piedras, and for Rabbi Metzger to follow up on his earlier statements.

Alle has risen in prominence as a supplier of glatt kosher meat since the former Agriprocessors filed for bankruptcy in late 2008.
