Two North Carolina State University faculty members were part of an
effort to encourage increased research funding by the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Jon Brandt, head of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Dr. Brian Farkas, associate head, Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, took part in the fifth annual
Coalition on Funding Agricultural Research Missions (CoFARM) and Biological and Ecological Science Coalition (BESC) Congressional Visits Day in late April. Event participants called for increased federal
investment in research at the NSF and within the USDA Agricultural and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program.

The event was attended by more than 30 scientists and leaders from a variety of organizations, who met in Washington D.C. for briefings with administration officials and congressional leaders and staff. Brandt is
chair of the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (C-FARE), while Farkas is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists.

Each Congressional office visit highlighted the role research fills in addressing issues associated with national security, the food supply and health. North Carolina Congressional delegation offices visited included those of Congressmen David Price and Bob Etheridge and Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan. C-FARE is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the application of economics to food, agricultural and resource issues at the national level. The Institute of Food Technologists is a nonprofit scientific society whose long-range vision is to ensure a safe and abundant food supply contributing to healthier people everywhere.

As members of CoFARM, both groups are committed to advancing and sustaining investment in the nation’s fundamental and applied agricultural research. Pictured from left are Congressman David Price,
