Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), the Herndon, Va.-based non-profit organization that administers the Certified Humane label, announced the launch of a new Web site, certifiedhumane.org, for the program.

The site includes new features such as the Farm/Ranch/Business section that outlines the benefits of being certified, an electronic press kit, the "HFAC Happenings" blog and a "Take Action" page that enables consumers to get involved.

A searchable database allows consumers to find Certified Humane products in their area or Certified Humane producers that sell product online. There also is a distributor search feature for restaurants, schools and catering companies.

According to HFAC, the Certified Humane designation assures consumers that meat, poultry, egg or dairy products they purchase have been produced according to HFAC's standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior.

Since the HFAC program was unveiled in 2003, more than 60 companies have been certified, HFAC said.
