Eastern Fish Co. of Teaneck, N.J., is recalling Bloom brand frozen raw extra jumbo shrimp because the product may contain undeclared sulfites. The recall applies to shrimp sold in 16-ounce packages and at full-service seafood cases in Bloom grocery stores.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of a serious allergic reaction by consuming this product. Sulfites commonly occur in food and do not harm people without sulfite allergies.

The shrimp was distributed to Bloom stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland between April 8 and June 4.

The package of the recalled products contains the wording “Product of Mexico.”

The recall was initiated after routine sampling and testing by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services detected the presence of sulfites. The product was distributed in packaging that did not declare the allergen’s presence.

No allergic reactions to this brand of shrimp have been reported to date.

“Anyone who is sensitive to sulfites should not eat this product,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Consumers who have purchased this brand of shrimp should throw it away or return it to the store where they bought it.”
