Broiler-type pullets hatched in June and intended for future domestic hatchery supply flocks were up 6 percent over June 2009. It was the third straight month of increases exceeding 4 percent, noted JPMorgan equity analyst Ken Goldman.
Also, the USDA revised May pullet hatchings up “significantly,” Goldman wrote in a report to investors, and now are counted at 8.35 million, compared with an initial report of 8.0 million. That’s a 9 percent increase year-over-year.
He concluded that the growth in supply is a negative for poultry processors. “That more pullets were hatched in May than in any month in history is, perhaps, a slightly sobering reminder that supply in 2011 should be higher than in 2010,” he wrote.
