U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) today congratulated Thomas Ross on his selection as the new University of North Carolina system president by the UNC Board of Governors. Ross, a Greensboro native, has served as the president of Davidson College since 2007. He will replace Erskine Bowles, who led the system for the past five years.

“The UNC system could not have asked for a better leader than Thomas Ross,” Hagan said. “I have known Tom and his family since his time in Greensboro, and he has the work ethic, the talent and the vision to lead the UNC system through the challenges and opportunities it will face in the upcoming years.  Our university system is the crown jewel of our state, and we are forever indebted to Erskine Bowles for his terrific leadership during the past five years. I have complete faith that President Ross will continue to fulfill the system’s mission to serve the needs of the state and its people through education, research and public service.”

Ross received his bachelor’s degree from Davidson and his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Prior to becoming president at Davidson, he served as an NC Superior Court judge, director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts, and the executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem.
