Sustainable Local Food Advisory Council to hold meeting Sept. 9 in Mills River

WHO/WHAT:
The N.C. Sustainable Local Food Advisory Council will meet to hear updates from its subcommittees, presentations on several food-related topics, and input from a regional local food council. The meeting is open to the public.

WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 9, 2 to 5 p.m. (Note: Subcommittees will meet at noon.)

WHERE: Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station, 74 Research Drive, Mills River

Aaron Newton, project coordinator for the Cabarrus County Local Food System, will speak about the work of his organization. John Day, manager of Cabarrus County, will give a presentation about how local and county governments interface with local food businesses and farms. L.T. Ward vice president of WNC Communities, will give an update on the WNC Regional Livestock Center. And Anna Teft, senior business lender with the Natural Capital Investment Fund, will present her organization’s perspective on financing for local food businesses and farms.


In addition, the council’s three subcommittees will present their recommendations and action items for inclusion in the council’s annual report, which is due to the General Assembly Oct. 1.
The General Assembly created the council last year. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler serves as chairman of the the 27-member group, which includes farmers, educators, food industry executives, community activists and local-food advocates.  For more information, go to www.ncagr.gov/localfood.
