CPI for meats, poultry drops first time in 8 months

After seven consecutive increases, the Consumer Price Index for meats, poultry, fish and eggs dropped 0.3 percent in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.


The index for food was up 0.2 percent in August after dropping 0.1 percent in July. The index for food away from home rose 0.3 percent in August, after remaining unchanged in July. The index for food at home held steady in August after two months of declines.


The indexes for dairy and related products and nonalcoholic beverages also fell slightly, while the indexes for fruits and vegetables, cereals and bakery products and other food at home rose slightly.
