Mexico has lifted a ban on imports of pork from Smithfield Packing Co.’s Tar Heel, N.C., slaughterhouse, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said on its Web site.
The ban, according to a government source, was imposed Aug. 13 and applied to product produced through Sept. 12 “because it was found to be off-conditioned (spoiled) during their port-of-entry inspection.”
Mexico, the source said, determined on Sept. 12 that the plant’s corrective action was acceptable.
Tar Heel can resume shipments of pork produced after that date, FSIS said.
