Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the country will not need to import poultry in 2011 and subsequent years, local news agency Interfax reported.

“I think that next year and in the following years we basically can do without the imports,” Putin was quoted as saying. “More so, because quite often our sanitary authorities have doubts about the production, transportation and storage of products.”

Moscow is trying to achieve self-sufficiency in poultry and pork, and boost domestic beef production.
