Perdue Farms officials are investigating the cause of an accident at its Lewiston, N.C., poultry plant that sent two unidentified workers to a local hospital Monday afternoon.

The two employees were airlifted to the medical facility in Pitt County following the accident at the Perdue Agribusiness Rendering Plant, which is in a separate building from a nearby Perdue processing plant. One of the injured workers suffered second-degree burns on 35 percent of his body and third-degree burns on his hands, according to a posting by a relative on the WITN-TV website. Eighty-six people work at the rendering plant.

Perdue officials have not released any information about the identities or conditions of the two workers, although a spokesman confirmed that both were given first aid before rescue crews arrived on the scene. The company is not required to report workplace accidents to state authorities unless three or more employees are hospitalized, according to WITN.com. The station also reported that the facility has not reported any accidents to OSHA in 10 years.

The original report can be found here.
