EDITORS NOTE:  While some media have mistakenly reported that the dairy checkoff is a government funded program, America’s dairy producers created a national dairy checkoff in 1983, which is funded by the dairy producers themselves and not through any taxpayer funds from USDA.  The USDA merely provides general oversight of the program. Dairy Management Inc (DMI), which brings together the producer-funded state and regional dairy promotion organizations and the National Dairy Board, was created by America’s dairy producers in 1995. DMI helps the dairy industry keep pace with both consumer preferences and the latest in dietary guidance by sharing nutrition science, product research, and consumer research. DMI also provides research to the industry to support their efforts in developing healthier versions of dairy foods - such as reduced-fat cheeses - that meet the health priorities of Americans without compromising on taste. And it is important to note that government and public health organizations encourage daily consumption of low-fat and fat-free dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt to support an overall healthy diet.
