Pilgrim's Pride could face civil penalties including fines and court action if it doesn't eliminate odors at its processing plant near Timberville, Va., according to local media reports.

The smells have lingered even after the company installed $200,000 worth of equipment intended to resolve the problem.

Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality has issued a notice of violation to the company for not being in compliance with its air quality permit, local reports said.

The agency hasn’t seen much progress in reducing the odors’ intensity or magnitude, the department’s deputy regional director, Keith Fowler, told the Daily News-Record.

Pilgrim's Pride is continuing to work to resolve the problem, company spokesman Gary Rhodes told the newspaper.

Pilgrim’s has employed an outside company, which is in the process of analyzing samples from the plant, to determine what is causing the problem, according to local TV station WHSV.
