The last few weeks of December brought a rush of activity in Congress.  Many joked that our Lame Duck session was anything but lame.  In the last week before Christmas, I was proud to see a number of important bills passed in the House of Representatives:

•         The Anti-Border Corruption Act, H.R. 6472, a bill I introduced to prevent corruption among U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents and ensure effective border security;

•         The Food Safety Modernization Act, S. 510, which represents the most sweeping overhaul of our food safety system in 70 years while protecting small farmers like those who are so vital to our Western North Carolina economy;

•         The Government Performance and Results Modernization Act of 2010, H.R. 2142, a Blue Dog backed bill which will bring increased accountability and transparency to the government by implementing a results-oriented approach that will enable Congress to invest in programs with proven effectiveness and stop funding those that are not effective.

This Wednesday, as I am sworn in to the 112th Congress, I will be thinking about these bills and other legislation, past and future, that will improve our economy, bring jobs back to America, care for our troops and veterans, protect our environment, and control our national debt.

I wish everyone in Western North Carolina a happy and prosperous 2011.  I am confident that this year will bring forward progress and economic growth for our region and our country.  In this coming year and in the 112th Congress, I resolve to continue to work to represent those of the 11th Congressional District to the best of my ability.

Please don’t hesitate to write, email, or call me with any questions or concerns.  Now, as always, it is an honor to serve you in the U.S. House.  My family and staff join in wishing you all the best in the year to come.

Heath Shuler
