Today U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) and fellow North Carolina Congressman G.K. Butterfield sent a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus encouraging termination of the Outlying Landing Field (OLF) Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).  The letter comes in response to the Navy’s recent announcement that it will suspend work on the OLF DEIS as a result of delaying the process for East Coast basing of the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) until 2014.  The congressmen argue that their constituents should no longer have to deal with drawn-out periods of ambiguity.

“The citizens of northeastern North Carolina are being unfairly subjected to even further uncertainty,” said Jones.  “They deserve to have a solution and should not have to wait three more years for a resolution.”

The letter also cites the country’s $1.5 trillion budget deficit as a reason to limit spending only to projects of critical need for national security.  Jones and Butterfield do not believe the project is critical, due to the constant delays.
