An analysis of the lifestyles and dietary habits of nearly 500,000 Europeans found no association between the consumption of fresh or processed red meat and an increased risk of bladder cancer.

The study looked at the relationships between diet, lifestyle and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other diseases in 481,419 people from Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The researchers, led by Paula Jakszyn from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Spain, also found no link between nitrosamines and heme iron and bladder cancer risk in the 1,001 patients who developed bladder cancer. The associations did not vary by sex, high vs. low risk bladder cancers, smoking status or occupation.

The study, titled European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, or EPIC, was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. An abstract can be viewed here.
