The National Radio Company of Ukraine is reporting that the Deputy Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food, Volodymyr Ladyka, is admitting that Ukraine will import about 100,000 metric tons of pork in 2011.
The radio’s website quotes the Deputy Minister as saying, "We are planning to be self-sufficient in meat production in two to three years, especially pork. We forecast that in 2011 we will buy no more than 100,000 (metric) tons from abroad."
Ladyka was unable to give an accurate forecast of the country’s import needs for beef and poultrymeat this year. In 2010, Ukraine imported 102,000 metric tons of fresh frozen pork, and around 40,000 metric tons of lard, pork and poultry fat.
