February 17th, 2011 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM,
Smithfield, NC and February 18, 9-11 a.m. at the Johnston County Ag Center

Due to EPA re-registration of products containing Methyl Bromide, Chloropircrin and Metam Sodium in December 2010; fumigant applicators are faced with new regulations for this growing season. This means that if you depend on products like Telone C-17, Vapam, Cholorpic, or Terrogas you will need to comply with these new regulations immediately. To meet the new requirements, applicators will need fumigant management plans, respirators and even a self-contained breathing apparatus. To assist growers in complying with the new regulations, the staff at the Johnston County Extension Center has organized 2 educational meetings and an opportunity for respirator fit testing at the Johnston County Agricultural Center. If you would like to participate in the respirator fit testing, we ask that you attend one of the following meetings. These meetings are open to everyone at no cost. Pesticide credits will be offered. Please call 919-989-5380 to pre-register for the meetings. February 17, 2011 at 6:30 pm – Johnston County Ag Center February 18, 2011 at 9:00 am – Johnston County Ag Center At these meetings, we will overview the new regulations and discuss requirements for compliance in 2011. Don Heres of Hazard-Risk Management Associates, Inc (HRMA). will be on the program to discuss “Proper Use and Handling of Respirators.” At the end of the program, those in attendance will have the opportunity to pre-register for respirator fit testing to be offered by HRMA. The fit testing will be on February 25th and 28th at the Johnston County Ag Center. HRMA is charging $15 per person for the fit testing. Payment will be collected at the meetings on February 17 & 18. We request that you bring payment by check or money order only and payable to Johnston County Cooperative Extension. You do not need to acquire a respirator prior to the fit testing. We will have Scott, 3M and Drager respirators available for the fit testing. These are also the only brands for which we will offer fit testing. In addition, we may have some respirators available at discounted prices. Medical clearance is also required before you or your employees begin using respirators. The proper medical clearance forms are enclosed. You will need this when you see a medical professional to acquire clearance. In addition, cost-share funds are available through the NC Agromedicine Institute if you follow the proper steps on the medical clearance and fit testing. This information will also be discussed at the meeting. If you have questions, please call Tim Britton or Bryant Spivey at 919-989-5380.
