Turkey egg sets up 6 percent while broiler sets level off

USDA reported turkey eggs in incubators on Feb. 1, 2011, in the United States totaled 28.2 million, up 6 percent from Feb. 1, 2010.  Eggs in incubators were up 1 percent from the Jan. 1, 2011 total of 27.9 million eggs.


Turkey poults hatched during January in the United States totaled 23.8 million, up 6 percent from January 2010.  Poults hatched were up 1 percent from the December 2010 total of 23.5 million poults.


The 22.9 million net turkey poults placed during January 2011 in the United States were up 5 percent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier.  Net placements were up 1 percent from the December 2010 total of 22.6 million.


Broilers
Commercial broiler hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 205 million eggs in incubators during the week ending Feb.12, 2011. This was down slightly from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 percent.


Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly program placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending Feb.12, 2011. Placements were up 2 percent from the comparable week a year earlier.


Cumulative placements from Jan. 2 through Feb. 12, 2011, were 1.01 billion, up 1 percent from the same period a year earlier.
