Today Congresswoman Renee Ellmers issued the following statement:

“Last year the 111th Congress failed to do its job and pass a 2011 budget.  Instead, they kicked the can down the road and passed a continuing resolution, which temporarily funded the government through March 4.

The new Congress has done the hard work of not only passing a continuing resolution that will fund the government through this year, but also cuts spending $100 billion. To turn our economy around we have to reduce the deficit. Let’s put a $100 billion cut into perspective. The federal government is supposed to spend $3.8 trillion this year under the President’s budget. A $100 billion cut is a 2.6% cut.

The ball is now in the Senate’s court, and ultimately in the President’s.  Democrats are now threatening a government shutdown rather than cutting spending 2.6%.”
