Air pollution is diminishing, but North Carolinians are still getting a lungful.

Prevailing winds sweep pollutants from coal-fired power plants in neighboring states across the Appalachians and into North Carolina. Similar plants here - North Carolina generates about half its electricity from coal - add to airborne pollution that harms human health.
