Comments Needed: ESA Bi-op for Chlorothalonil (BRAVO)
Story Date: 3/29/2011

Chlorothalonil (Bravo) ALERT: Comments needed by April 12th:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) & US EPA have issued their BIO’s (Biological Opinions) for the 4th group of chemicals. This group includes Chlorothalonil (Bravo)… A product that is critically important to many crops including potatoes, tomatoes, other vegetable crops, peanuts, turf and ornamentals; Christmas trees and early season applications on stone fruit and almonds.

The Draft BiOp makes incorrect broad “jeopardy” and “habitat modification” opinions based on flawed risk assessments, which could impact chlorothalonil use going forward. Syngenta intends to vigorously defend chlorothalonil uses and scientifically respond to the NMFS assertions. We have requested at least a 60-day extension of the comment period, however it is critical that the industry weigh in to support this product and the importance of utilizing best available science. Under the ESA, a BiOp must be based on “the best scientific and commercial data available.” Clearly a BiOp that is not based on “the best scientific and commercial data …” could result in EPA imposing unnecessary and potentially onerous label restrictions, buffers, etc. which could make chlorothalonil unavailable for use on thousands of acres.

While this BiOp has been developed using the PNW (Pacific Northwest) salmon & steelhead species. The implication will likely apply more broadly and affect uses nationwide. Your comments are critical to insure that US EPA and NMFS utilize the “best available science”
