Take Action: Regulatory Reform in NC
Story Date: 3/31/2011

Lawmakers in the General Assembly have made regulatory reform a top priority this session.  A newly appointed Joint House and Senate Regulatory Reform Committee (click here to see members) is seeking public input to identify and scrutinize burdensome, costly, or outdated rules and regulations.

The Committee will be holding public hearings in Greenville on April 4th and Raleigh on April 21st.  Input can be either given at the public hearing  (Details below) or you may submit comments without attending a hearing by sending comments to the following email address - RegReform@ncleg.net. If you are interested in making a brief  (2 minute) statement to the committee, plan to 30 minutes prior to the start of the hearing to sign up to speak.

The General Assembly also recently took action to stop any new rules or regulations while they take a look at existing ones. Senate Bill 22, which was signed into law last week, temporarily prohibits state agencies from adopting new rules that lead to significant costs for the regulated community, unless the new rules were in response to any of the following: 1. a serious and unforeseen threat to public health/safety; 2. an act of the General Assembly or Congress; 3. a change in state or federal budgetary policy; 4. a federal regulation; or 5. a court order. Senator David Rouzer (R- Johnson) spoke with WRAL's Laura Leslie about SB 22 saying it is just a "time-out" that won't actively repeal any current rules - Click here to listen to that brief interview
