Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday she will serve as chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, Poultry, Marketing and Agriculture Security.
Gillibrand has authored legislation aimed at eradicating E. coli O157:H7 (E. coli Eradication Act) and requiring USDA to regulate the six strains of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STECs) known to cause foodborne illness in the United States.
However, in her new role on the Senate subcommittee Gillibrand said she will focus on overhauling the milk-pricing system. “I look forward to correcting the outdated regulations and bad pricing structures that make it difficult for our nation’s agricultural sector to thrive,” she said.
Gillibrand also served on the House Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry while representing New York’s 20th Congressional District.
