Progress Energy and its employees are providing financial and technical support for the relief efforts and recovery in Japan.

The Progress Energy Foundation has announced it will provide up to $50,000 in matching funds for contributions from the company’s employees to organizations and agencies aiding the people of Japan. Employees may make contributions to the charitable nonprofit agency of their choice. The total Foundation match will be given to the Japanese Earthquake and the Pacific Tsunami fund of the American Red Cross, Progress Energy’s disaster-relief partner.

“The people of Japan have suffered a tragedy of unimaginable proportions,” said Jeff Lyash, executive president – Energy Supply. “As the search teams continue to recover victims of the earthquake and tsunami and the cleanup gets under way, our foundation contribution and the donations from our employees will be put to good use.”

Progress Energy also will continue to provide technical assistance and equipment as needed to aid in the efforts to stabilize the reactors and spent fuel pools at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. For example, the company is sending 700 full-face negative pressure respirators to the Daiichi Plant, where employees are working around the clock to stabilize the units and will continue to need a massive amount of resources after the plant is safely shut down.
