A U.S. District Court in western Louisiana has ruled that workers at House of Raeford chicken processing plants in Arcadia, La., and Wallace, N.C., are not entitled to compensation for donning or doffing their safety clothing and gear.

Donning and doffing are not principal activities of the employees’ work, “so donning protective gear does not commence the continuous workday,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Hornsby wrote in his decision.

The production workers had argued that time spent donning and doffing should be included in their hours worked.
