A federal appeals court on Monday upheld a lower court decision that blocked certain provisions of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect, according to court documents.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled that a federal judge did not abuse her discretion in blocking certain provisions of the law, including one that would have required police to check immigration status if they stop someone to enforce other laws.

The Obama administration had filed a lawsuit challenging the Arizona law in court. The panel’s decision today denied a request by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who sought to lift an injunction imposed by a federal judge the day before the controversial law was to go into effect on July 29, 2010.
