The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed in the Federal Register a phased long-haul, cross-border trucking program between the United States and Mexico.
The proposed new program prioritizes safety while satisfying the United States’ international trade obligations and promoting domestic job growth, federal officials said in a news release.
U.S. and Mexican officials agreed in March to a deal whereby the United States would reinstate the trucking program that would ensure Mexican trucks met U.S. safety standards and Mexico would drop retaliatory tariffs on American goods such as pork.
The public will have 30 days to submit comments on the proposed program.
