U.S. farmers in the top corn producing states had planted just 9 percent of the U.S. corn crop by April 24, compared to 7 percent a week ago, according to USDA.

By this time last year, farmers had already planted 46 percent of the crop. The five-year average for this point in the season is 23 percent of the crop planted.

USDA’s weekly Crop Progress report is based on surveys in the 18 states that typically grow 92 percent of the nation’s corn crop.
