Jones applauds Supreme Court decision to uphold Arizona immigration law

Today U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) applauded the U.S. Supreme Court for its decision to uphold a significant portion of the Arizona immigration law requiring businesses to use the federal E-Verify system to check the immigration status of employees. In a 5-3 decision, the court also ruled that states can revoke the business licenses of businesses who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
“This is an important step in our country’s fight against illegal immigration,” said Jones. “We must stop rewarding those who break the law and enter this country illegally. This is especially true at a time when unemployment for U.S. citizens is unacceptably high.”
Congressman Jones has been a longtime supporter of the E-Verify system. Although currently voluntary, the number of businesses who sign up for E-Verify grows by 1,300 each week. E-Verify has had overwhelming, bipartisan support, both in Congress and with the public.
