Broiler-type eggs set down, chicks placed up

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 207 million eggs in incubators during the week ended May 28, down 2 percent from the amount of eggs set in the corresponding week a year earlier, according to USDA’s latest Broiler Hatchery report.


Meanwhile, broiler growers placed 174 million chicks for meat production during the same week ending. Placements were up 1 percent from the comparable week a year earlier.


Cumulative placements from Jan. 2 through May 28 were 3.59 billion, up 1 percent from the same period a year earlier.
